North Shore Chips In To Equip Rescue Team

North Shore Rescue volunteers are on call 24 hours a day, 365 days a year to provide lifesaving services to the North Shore and Bowen Island. But the organization receives limited government funding and relies primarily on donations from the individuals and corporations.

This year, North Shore Credit Union hosted its 11th annual charitable golf tournament in Support of North Shore Rescue – and raised a record $46,000.

Established in 1965, North Shore Rescue helps keep hikers and others here safe, and   aids the Sea to Sky, Sunshine Coast, Fraser Valley and Washington State rescue organizations. Rescue operations take place in all settings, from mountains to canyon valleys to urban locations.

Since its inception in 1997, the NSCU tournament has raised $350,000 in cash and in-kind donations to support North Shore Rescue. With the rescue team regularly dealing with hazards much more severe than sand traps and ponds, this funding helps them carry on with the critical and life-saving work that they do year-round.

With proceeds from last year’s event, North Shore Rescue was able to replace their old truck with a Ford F350, 4x4 crew cab pickup, complete with special-purpose canopy. Its main purpose is to tow vehicles, trailers and ATVs as well as provide back-up to their main rescue vehicle.

Funds raised at the 2008 tournament will go toward equipping the Ford and completing the search and rescue station at the Capilano Watershed, which was funded by this event two years ago.

In keeping with tournament tradition, the sight of the Rescue helicopters landing on the first hole was a highlight for many. Others enjoyed the opportunity to meet Global TV’s Sophie Lui, Rock 101’s Bro Jake and ex-Canuck Tony Tanti, all of whom hit the links in support of North Shore Rescue.

Golfers were serenaded at the start of their rounds by a North Shore Rescue member who expertly played the bagpipes, and at the end by Handsworth Secondary’s fantastic jazz band.
