Comfort And Sophistication In For Fall Fashions

Once again it is time to write an article about fall fashions. It seems like summer never really got off the ground and “poof” the evenings are getting darker, the air is getting cooler and suddenly my suntan has faded. The question that seems to arise at this time of year is: “So, Erica what’s IN this season.”
I’ve done my homework and below have made some suggestions for staying current. I can’t comment on the trends of the 20-somethings out there, not having been one for some time now, but will try to provide some practical and “funky” advice on what’s happening in the world around me.
Sharpen your pencil
If smart and sexy is your combination this fall, then choose the “pencil” skirt as a season basic. My first shipment from Mexx of this classic style sold out in three days. You know why? Because it looks great and “sophisticated” on most body types. In fact, recently a young gal was looking for something to wear to an interview, so we dressed her in a straight skirt and a crisp white blouse. She got the job.
Shorts in winter?
I would have to say this is a very “forward” look that, personally, I don’t believe is easy to pull off. I was in a major mall the other day and did a double-take on a mom with short shorts on with black scrunched boots. The first question that came to mind was, “Is she really comfortable?” because she looked really awkward. So ladies, leave that look to “Posh Spice” and your gorgeous 18-year-old daughter.
Vests
Love them. Had a gal in the shop the other day who was attending a function in a “box” at BC Place Stadium. She wanted to look “with it” without looking ridiculous. She ended up in a white blouse and an “Esprit” vest, and looked dynamite. Now there’s a word I haven’t used in a long time. You could actually put the vest and white shirt with the pencil skirt and have a look that will work well in the evening, as well as for business.
Denim
From skinny to extra wide, this season the look ranges right across the board. Most of my customers still aren’t going for the skinny jean as they feel they accentuate all of the wrong areas. After seeing them now for over a year, I can honestly say that most women do look better in other styles of denim. My favourite look for fall is the trouser jean; in fact I love them so much I’m adding three pairs to my wardrobe. When the denim is dark, which is huge this fall, you can wear them dressed up without much work. So my advice is leave the skinny alone; add a dark trouser jean to your wardrobe and you will look totally up to date.
Accessorize
So you got the denim trousers happening and the great top, but there are still a few fundamental pieces missing. Splurge and purchase a great oversized bag, one pair of boots that you can pair with those jeans or the skirt, and some jewelry that you can layer. Now you’ve got it all going on.
Happy Fall.
