Seeing Stars- It Might Be Their Eyelashes

If you’ve met me, you know that I am never seen without my false lashes. Why let one day of your life be ordinary when you can be extraordinary, and false lashes can do this for you anytime, anywhere. While I’m working a long day on set making sure everyone else is looking gorgeous, there really isn’t any time for me, but even when my makeup starts to fade away I know that I’ve still got Betty Davis eyes.
Lashes became a makeup staple for film star legends, and makeup artists such as Max Factor and Ben Nye helped apply those special cosmetic accessories. Can you imagine Greta Garbo or Audrey Hepburn without their lashes? Do you think Frank Sinatra would have fallen for Ava Gardner that sultry night if she weren’t wearing hers?
Are you now thinking about giving false lashes a try? Here are a few tips to take you through it one step at a time. Tools you’ll want include: eyelash curler, Tweezerman tweezers, mascara, DUO adhesive, small scissors and magnifying mirror.
1. Decide on the look you’re seeking. Choose individual lashes for a natural effect and full strip lashes for a more dramatic look.
2. Apply your eye makeup except for the mascara, curl your lashes, apply mascara, and then allow lashes to dry for one minute.
3. Carefully remove the false lashes from the container using your tweezers. Fit the lashes on your eyelid, remove and trim inner corners only if necessary – and never trim the outer corners. Measure and trim the other lash using sharp scissors.
4. Hold one lash in your hand and apply the DUO adhesive in a very thin line along the base. Air dry for 30 seconds. Then, looking into a mirror, apply the false lash as close to your natural lash line as possible.
5. Adjust your lashes with your fingers. Hold for 10 seconds, repeat and make sure both sides are even. At this time you can apply more mascara to blend the false lashes into your natural lashes. If using the individual lashes work from the outer corners going inward and use at least three individual lashes for each side.
6. Practice, practice, practice. This is a difficult trick to master but once you’ve got it I promise you will never look back.
7. Take your lashes off by using a Q-tip and liquid eye makeup remover. Gently apply the remover on the false lash and remove, clean the excess glue off with your thumb nail and place back in the case to preserve its shape. These lashes can last for about two months if you are really careful.
Many false lashes are available for purchase on the North Shore. Single lashes by Ardell are sold at London Drugs and come in three different sizes and two shades -- black and brown. If you have light coloured hair and fair skin, try using the brown lashes to give you a much more natural look. Single lashes are subtler while strip lashes add high drama. MAC also carries a great variety of false lashes and for theme parties you can buy fun crazy lashes at Carol’s Costume Corner (at 152 East 2nd in North Van.)
My favorite lashes are MAC #20. They are three-quarters in length, easy to apply and look fabulous. (MAC is at the Bay, Park Royal North; make sure you buy the DUO glue available there.)
