The act of laying hands on the human body to comfort and relieve pain is as old as instinct.  Human touch conveys warmth, serenity and healing.  It also conveys caring and love.  The first thing most people do when experiencing pain, is to put their hands on the hurt.  When a child falls and scrapes her knee, she wants her mother to touch it, or kiss it and make it better.

The living body, human or animal, radiates warmth and energy.  This energy is the life force itself, and has as many names, eg. mana, prana, chi. In Japan the energy is termed ki,  and it is from this word that Reiki is named. Ki is defined as energy, air, breath, wind, vital breath, and vital essence.  As the activating energy of the universe, it's an electrical type of energy that creates our bodies, determines our state of health, and is also the essential life force of the earth, planets, stars and universe.  These sources of ki energy affect the ki energy in our bodies.  Everything alive contains ki and radiates it - it's the biomagnetic energy of the aura.

What is Reiki?
The word Reiki is made of two Japanese words - Rei which means 'the Wisdom of God or the Higher Power' and Ki which means 'life force energy'.  Reiki means 'spiritually guided life force energy'.

How is Reiki performed?
The Reiki system of healing is a technique for transmitting this subtle energy through the hands into the human energy system.  During a session the recipient remains fully clothed and can be either lying on a table or sitting in a chair.

What does a Reiki session feel like?
A session feels like warm, gentle sunshine, flowing and surrounding and comforting the body. Reiki aids the body in releasing stress and tension by creating deep relaxation and restores energy balance and vitality by relieving the physical and emotional effects of unreleased stress.  It gently opens blocked meridians and chakras, leaving one feeling relaxed and at peace.

How is Reiki used?
Reiki has been used for pain relief, to speed the healing process, for emotional and physical well-being, stress relief, and for balancing the chakras and aura energy.  Healings can also be effective for animals.

Reiki is powerful, yet wonderfully gentle and nurturing.
